Gareth David-Lloyd - Biography | HELLO!
Early life
Gareth David Lloyd was born in Newport, South Wales on 28 March 1981. He was introduced to the world of acting when he appeared as a robot in a junior school play after his mum and aunt encouraged him to get involved in extra-curricular activities. But what started as a hobby soon became a passion...
Career beginnings
Gareth performed with The Dolman Youth Theatre in Newport in Macbeth, The Threepenny Opera and Henry V. After studying at the National Youth Theatre the aspiring thesp went on to make various TV appearances, including small parts in Casualty, The Bill and ITV detective series Rosemary & Thyme.
Torchwood and beyond
But it was his role in Torchwood as the beloved Ianto Jones that would bring him to public attention in 2006. Gareth went on to star in the Doctor Who adult-themed spin-off show until 2009's Children of Earth, when (spoilers!) his character tragically died. A shrine for the fictional Ianto Jones still exists in Cardiff Bay over ten years on due to his character's long-lasting popularity with fans of the sci-fi universe.
Post-Torchwood, Gareth has starred in more popular BBC dramas such as Holby City and Casualty, and also has voiced characters in video games such as Dragon Age's Solas. He has also regularly returned to the role of Ianto in audio adventures with the audio play production company Big Finish, who have worked on spin-off audio ranges connected to the many worlds of Doctor Who for over twenty years.
Personal life
Gareth is married to Gemma James. They tied the knot in 2010 and have two children, a daughter Lily and a son, Eli.
